Dell has made no secret of its support for the Blu-ray format, so it’s no surprise to see it being one of the first to offer a Blu-ray notebook.

The XPS M1710 looks as good as it runs. The cutting-edge, if rather loud design features brushed metal accents with a choice of red or metallic black armor.

Thinner and lighter than you’d expect, the M1710 also let’s you show your own colors, with three 16-color customizable lighting areas and a red back-lit XPS touchpad.

The WUXGA display supports an ultra-high resolution of 1920x1200 and features ‘TrueLife’ technology, with a 170-inch widescreen display, promising rich, vibrant color with crisp clear text and up to 10 percent higher contrast ratio versus the same display with an anti-glare coating.

And it’s 30 percent brighter than the previous generation XPS gaming notebook.

Dell is offering the XPS M1710 notebook, with the option of configuring the machine with a dual-layer, 50GB BD-R burner.

There’s also a standard-configuration M1710 with the Blu-ray drive built in, along with a 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1-4GB of 667MHz DDR 2 memory, 80-160GB of SATA hard drive storage, a 512MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7950 GTX graphics chip.

The M1710 is currently only available in the US, with an early-adopter price tag of $3,699.
