COACH recognizes community based physicians

COACH: Canada’s Health Informatics Association has established the Community Based Physician Leader/Innovator Award.

The new award, established by COACH in conjunction with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) and Practice Solutions Ltd., is part of the 2007 Canadian Health Informatics Awards (CHIA) program, a joint effort of the Canadian Healthcare Information Technology Trade Association (CHITTA) and COACH.

“About 75 percent of Canadian physicians have a community-based footprint,” says William Pascal, Chief Technology Officer with CMA. “The new award recognizes their very important work as leaders, mentors and advocates when it comes to using IT in community-based health care.”

Nomination Criteria

Any practicing Canadian MD who meets the criteria outlined on the COACH website at www.coachorg.com/ can be nominated for the new award. (The complete requirements are outlined on the “Member Programs” menu, under the “Awards” button.)

Nomination criteria include clinical colleagues recognizing the nominee as a champion for advancing the use of IT in healthcare delivery. The nominee must also have been a role model for using technology to improve the quality of patient care in a community setting. Nominees may have demonstrated leadership or innovation through efforts such as implementing and using an electronic medical record in an innovative manner in his or her practice or by encouraging interconnectivity of IT systems between health care providers and community institutions.

Deadline: Sept. 17

Nominations for the Community Based Physician and other 2007 COACH awards and Steven Huesing Scholarship applications must be submitted to the COACH office by 5 p.m. EDT on Sept. 17. Nominations are also invited for the:

Leadership in the Field of Health Informatics Award;

Innovation in the Adoption of Health Informatics Award;

Emerging Leader in Health Informatics Award;

President’s Award.

Both the Awards Nomination Form and Steven Huesing Scholarship Application are available on the COACH website in online format and as PDFs that can be printed for faxing or mailing.

The awards will be presented at the CHIA Gala at the Arcadian Court in Toronto on November 15, 2007. CHIA is a health informatics industry event that is a joint collaboration between COACH and CHITTA, the trade association for health informatics vendors.
