Billed as the world’s first set of luxury computer speakers, Axiom’s Audiobytes have arrived among a fanfare of hype from the audiophile world.

Unfortunately, the Canadian company appears to have just missed the mark.

At the top of the market, it’s all about performance and the $349-plus price tag doesn’t seem to justify what is in essence is a shrunk-down pair of bookshelf speakers. The sound is fine, but it lacks the extra yard of quality that the ‘luxury’ tag demands.

It’s a real shame as there is a definite gap in the market for a competitor to Bose’s excellent Companion 5, which, for just $50 more, makes the Audiobytes look (and more importantly, sound) strangely old fashioned.

Oh, and if you are tempted, avoid the optional wood finish. It looks terrible.
